Reasons why people have taken LEAP |
Some people came in asking, Why do I make the same mistakes over and over? This happens often and is very common among people in general. Partly it has to do with regret about something in the past, and partly to do with missing goals and not feeling successful. People want what they want, but don't always know how to get it, and especially how they defeat themselves in the process! And so they do the same things over and over. The ask, "How do I get off this merry-go-round?" LEAP helps them see where they are stuck in self-made ruts, and do what's needed to get out of them. Personal growth and development People want to learn about themselves, have better relationships, contribute to others and the community, and feel as if they are growing as persons. They find that LEAP helps them organize their thoughts and actions as they seek new goals and to change their fundamental attitudes toward life itself. (This is the "existential" part of LEAP.)( Counseling on personal issues LEAP combines professional counseling with Adlerian education and personal development to help you live a happier, more successful life as you apply LEAP learnings to a specific issue in your life today. Although Adler was a medical doctor, his approach was based on an educational rather than medical model. He did not see his clients as mentally "ill" so much as in need of insight and understanding, something that could be taught. LEAP takes the same approach when it combines counseling with learning how and why we create and use your Patterns. My life up to now . . . Some people want the structure of LEAP to help them organize a complete review of their lives: where they've been, what their lives mean, where they are heading and whether they should "change course." "My life from now on . . . LEAP helps people at a cross-roads in life, a time of change or transition. This is often when something has changed (through death, divorce, job change, last child moving out, etc.) and the person seeks guidance for whatever comes next. LEAP helps organize thinking, goals, abilities, limits, and plans for the next stage in their lives. This is sometimes done with partners, where one partner is ready to "move on" and the other partner is not. For example: When a partner retires from a job or career and is suddenly "just hanging around the house," the other partner can find it tense to have the partner around all the time! Marriage Counseling LEAP helps each partner to see their own patterns, and also how their individual patterns affect the partnership. This becomes an opportunity for individual and partnership growth. (As relationship counseling, this can also involve friends, work partners, neighbors, in fact any situation in which the patterns of each person creates conflicts or differences in the relationship. Marriage Preparation Couples preparing for marriage use LEAP to learn how their individual patterns will affect them as a couple. Evidence of LEAPs positive effects is how many couples have remained happily together for so many years. As the fourth step of a 12-Step program The various 10-step programs (AA, NA, OA, etc.) encourage members to "make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves" as the fourth step. LEAP provides a positive framework within which to do this, cooperating with the client's sponsor. |
To learn about LifeCourse Patterns in general Some people simply want to learn about the various psychological schools and self-help programs. Often, when they experience the LEAP approach, it becomes more personal for them! To use LEAP in counseling Pastors, social workers, therapists, marriage counselors, family therapists, psychologists, etc., take LEAP to add another dimension to their own counseling approach. To lead a LEAP group -- Some who take LEAP decide they want to lead it with individuals or couples in a group class or a training session. We've created a special manual that helps set up and publicize a group, as well as how to lead each session. We've created a special manual that helps set up and publicize such a group, as well as details on how to lead each session. (LEAP has been used in mental health facilities, teaching centers, university classes, as well as church and community "adult education" courses.) To find the meaning and effect of ones life to this point We "senior citizens" (such as me!) have more life behind us than we have ahead of us. Thinking about our lives, we wonder if we have had a positive effect in the world. It's sort of a A Wonderful Life kind of search. LEAP helps us to reminisce and gain a sense that our life had purpose and meant something to others. To summarize life at the end of life This is usually for those who know the ending of their life will be soon, are quite aware of themselves and their lives, and want to bring some completion in the time they have left. LEAP knows we have only so much time to live, and that part of the well-lived life is seeing the journey through to the end. This application of LEAP often involves a person at the edge of life laughing and crying and swearing as they summarize who they have been, using the ten LifeCourse Patterns as their outline. To learn practical, useful methods to control unwelcome thoughts and feelings LEAP is a positive, practical approach to creating a happier, more effective life. You learn specific techniques for dealing with specific problems. For example, the very powerful 4-S Method helps you in less than a minute learn to control unwanted thoughts and feelings. Clients have said that just this one method is worth the entire cost of LEAP! (PS: It is. Personal testimony, which we discuss when we come to this topic.) I think you can see that LEAP On-Line is more than just normal
counseling. It involves many ways and many reasons for people to learn about themselves,
to solve specific problems, to learn how to solve all their problems, and much, much more.
And so . . . |
Here are a few reasons some people may NOT take LEAP! |
| "I'm afraid I might learn something about myself that I don't want to know!" | |
| "I dont believe in psychology. It's against my religion!" | |
| "I don't want people to think I'm crazy!" | |
| "It costs too much!" | |
